PostSubject: Brakes Tightening Up   Tue Jul 03, 2012 12:50 am

I had just finished driving around town Sunday and found that my brakes started to tighten up. I had very little play on the pedal between no brake and full on braking. This has happened to me before but not to this degree. I've read the manuals and search the web and found some information on the subject. The best article I found was right at the top of the google search,

Has anyone else had this issue? I am certain that the pushrod was adjusted by the guy who had the car before me so I need to get that to the correct "factory spec". I've successfully bled the brakes and adjusted the drum brakes per the manual (and other sources) so I think I'm good there but will do it again just to make sure I've got all the air out.

Haven't had it happen on my Bug, but it did happen to the hydraulic clutch on one of my MR2s. As usual, it was due to a maladjusted master cylinder pushrod.

You want just enough slack that there's about a centimeter of pedal travel before the pushrod even touches the piston on the brake master cylinder.

You may want to check your flexible brake lines and replace if necessary. This can cause a similar symptom.

They have an 8 year expected lifespan. They turn gooey inside and expand causing this very issue.

Cheap fix at $12 each. Do them all, bleed the system, obviously.
