When I accelerate from a stop I have a huge flat spot. And the MPG is not good. I have a mech. 009 distributor. Would a Vac. Advance be better?

That really depends on what carb that you are running. If you are running a Pict 34 then it is my experience that it is better to run a vacuum advanced dizzy. Just my 2 cents tho!!

Where is your timing set at? On a 009 you can't statically time it, you have to time it with the engine running. Around 32 degree's before TDC at full advance or about 3000rpm.

I have ran a .009 with my H30/31 PICT carb (cousin to the 34 PICT 3) and had a flat spot.  I was timing that dizzy at 30 degrees.  Usual range is 28-32 degrees....for me 28 was too low and 32 too high. Be sure when you time this you are running at > 3000 RPM.

I have since then switched to a SVDA (mech and vacuum) and that eliminated the flat spot all together.  You time this carb the same way you would time a .009.  Since I rebuilt my engine I now am timed at 28 degrees and getting better mpg (28-30 mpg depending on stop/go or freeway).

switching from .009 to SVDA in the bus made a night and day difference. 34pict 3 with SVDA works amazin timing between 28-32 deg at 30000 rpm
