009 to SVDA Saga

Anybody know what the vacuum on a 72 beetle should be? I have an old vacuum gauge it says I am pulling 18-20 inches of vacuum.
I am going from a 009 distributor to a SVDA distributor. I have returned 1 distributor to bugformance already because the vacuum canister was bad. They said I had to return the whole thing; I could not just get the canister. So now, on the second distributor it did the same thing. It ran fine for a few days, and then it would hardly run at all. am i pulling too much vacuum?

More details.
I had a 009 distributor in the bug when I got it. It had a huge flat spot. Finally got a SVDA distributor it ran fine for a day then the vac. Canister let go. Got a replacement ran fine for 2 days looks likes the vac. canister let go again. I have a 34/3 carb. The book says I should time this @ 5deg.ATDC. Looking online, it looks like the 72 had a double canister. That is why it has the 5deg. Setting. So with the SVDA should it be 7.5 deg.BTDC??????
Something to think about when doing this. #1 on a 009 is about 15 deg. Different than the SVDA. So the whole distributor body has to be turned a bit to find the teeth in the distributor shaft. It’s not plug and play.

when timing the SVDA, you need to be between 28 - 32 deg BTC at 3500RPM. Make sure you pull the vaccum line off the dizzy and plug it.

Got another replacement, this is #3. The guy tested the canister before I left the shop. It looked good to 20 inches. I also got a new graduated degree pulley. I should be able to see more of what is going on.

Well I finally had time to finish installing the distributor. All tuned up to approx. 30 degrees. Vac line off then I attached it had about 38 degrees. Only drove a few miles feels ok. It has a small hesitation on a slow start from a stop.

The 3rd vacuum canister popped. Ran well for 2 days. I think I am done with SVDA. So I’m back on the 009. Had it running real well, Then I drove to Roseville seemed fine until I got off the freeway. Stalled out at every light going to Frys. I’m not sure, I think it might be the cap or the condenser or more dirt from the gas tank.

Sounds like your idle jet plugged up...

You were right it was the idle circuit. I pull the carb cleaned it, put a new set of gaskets in. put it all back together it still would not idle. Got on the net came up with the anti-diesel solenoid, If it fails it will not open the idle circuit.
