Todays oil Empty
PostSubject: Todays oil   Todays oil EmptyThu Sep 02, 2010 9:23 pm

I was on line today looking for something and got side tracked. Its pretty scary we are running out of motor oil designed for our engines. Our engines need zinc and something else (I Forgot). Well zinc and the other thing are not Catalytic converter friendly. It looks like Rotella is the last of the buy anywhere oil that wont kill our cams.

I found the discussion on Shop talk here is the link.

I have always used Royal Purple's 'Break In' oil and/or XPR 30wt. They are a bit pricey compared to others but I have had good luck. And if you want to believe the cheap VDO temp gauges, my motor runs a few degrees cooler (well it used to, hasn't ran in a few months). RP's break in oil contains the higher levels of zinc and phosphorus needed.

I was at Summit Racing yesterday and found the oil for our aircooled engines. It is a HP oil for flat tappet lifters. That's is us. When the oil manufactures pulled the zinc out of the oil they kind of screwed us. First we are not running catalytic converters and hydraulic lifters. And it it $5.95 a quart I got a case of 30W but they do have others weights. Here is a link http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-MGSAE30/

VW Enterprise over here in Shingle Springs carries vdub oil with zink. (530) 621-2939. Call Drew and ask him where he gets it. He sells it for cheap.

Actually, finding oil is easier than you think. Anything with an SL rating (In the little circle on the bottle).
Generally, the HD single weight oils are SL rated, so pretty much any HD 30 has what the aircooled engine needs.
In our climate, this oil is generally fine for year 'round service.

For added peace of mind, you can put in a half a quart of break in oil, and I think CIP1 sells a zinc additive for break in, so you could use 1/4 bottle of that at each oil change.
