| Not to take away from Tech Day tomorrow as that is an awesome thing but I was thinking about working on my rear brakes tonight.
And the only reason I was thinking about tonight instead of taking her to Tech Day is I have not had the rear drums off yet, so I really do not know what I am in for. I doubt there is anything too serious going on but you never know.
So in case I ran into an issue with a bearing, a seal, or somehting like that, I wanted to have tomorrow to go get parts if need be. It seems impossible to get specialty parts on a Sunday around here. And since she pretty much is my daily, it sucks when she has to sit for a few days.
Also, the '73 is sitting there is case I need to 'borrow' anything major.
SO, I was thinking of lighting up the firepit in the drive way to keep the bugs (of the insect variety not VWs) away and if anyone wanted to come hang out, that could be cool.
I have to see how the work day plays out, a couple of my engineers are out sick today so I am on the hook should anything come up. It is possible my big plans might go by the wayside. You just never know in my line of work.
But if anyone is interested, send me a PM and I'll keep you updated and maybe we could worok something out.

| So it seems my star adjusters were jacked up. They were bottomed out and would not turn at all. Massive corrosion.
Also, each side was missing one of the rubber plugs in the backing plate so things were pretty rusty in the drums as well.
Although the pads were actually pretty thick still and the drums are in great shape. The pads don't look so good even though there is still a lot of material left so I think a replacement is in order anyway.
Now for the bummer. the brake shoes I picked up in Sacramento while I was working down there today are the wrong ones.
They are for a 65-67 year, not as wide as the '68 to '74 ones.
Not the first time this has happened.
I think with fuel at 4.50 a gallon, it is probably cheaper to pick up another set in Grass Valley tomorrow rather than drive all the way back to Sac.
But I did manage to get everything cleaned up and the cylinders replaced, so I think I will be in good shape to finish up tomorrow...

| So brake night turned into day, but what a difference new shoes that are properly adjusted make.
She actually stops significantly better now.
I drove to the outlets down Auburn-Folsom Rd. tonight after a test run up to Alta-Sierra this afternoon.
I am officially a fan of PFI now.
Oh, I went ahead a put new cotter pins in the rear castle nuts, figured I didn't want to suffer the same fate as seen on one of our group's video.
On to the transmission, clutch, shifter problem....
Although, I heard a new noise in the front end tonight. Funny how you fix one noise and suddenly you can hear a new one...
P.S.
The brake adjustment procedure on Rob and Dave's site is money, works like a charm.

| That's how it always is. Fix one thing to find another. | |

| THATS JUST HOW IT IS WITH A 42 YEAR OLD CAR. YOU CAN FIX EVERY NOISE YOU HEAR AND WHEN YOU THINK YOUVE FIXED EVERYTHING THERE IS YOU'LL START OVER AT THE BEGINING AGAIN ESPECIALLY THE WAY YOU DRIVE I FEEL THAT IVE GOTTEN TO THE POINT WHERE I KNOW THE CAR ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO DETERMINE WEATHER A NOISE IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED OR SOMETHING TO JUST GET USED TO. | |

| Nope. Run it until it breaks and you only have to deal with it once. | |

| It's all fun and games until someone breaks a cotter pin and looses a wheel... | |
