Fuel system problem? Empty
PostSubject: Fuel system problem?   Fuel system problem? EmptyTue Apr 05, 2011 3:31 pm

Well, I just drove home from the gym. Half way home the bug loses all power. I tap the throttle and it stays alive for a split second and then all I hear is some sort of a spinning sound. I did this for about a block, heard a pop, then it drove normal. I soon as I turned on my street it goes out a again. Fuel was able to escape from the gas cap some how, which is weird cause there was no potholes or nothing making the car bounce around to make the gas come through the top. The motor is a 1600 single port that only has a supposed "1,300" mile estimate.

Check all of your basic tune up procedures first and if it still is doing it we can go from there. The buildup of pressure in the tank from rising temperatures probably forced some fuel out around the cap.

Did you just fill up the car? Mine leaks out the fuel sender for the gas gauge. PIA
What kind of fuel filter are you running the VW one, they are crap plugged a jet using one. I would run a VW filter from a guy from Mexico he would show up at bug o rama every once and a while. Much better.

Good luck

I just took off the air filter and shot some carb cleaner down and wiped off some dirt. It drove better and felt like it was finally using all 40hp for once. The fuel filter is the typical $1 plastic with paper filament. I just installed it with the motor about two months or so ago. The gas tank was only about half full. I think the timing is off as well because the pitter patter doesn't have any sort of rhythm. Plus the exhaust looks to be home made, I want a stock pea shooter right about now.

Sounds like you may have got it figured out. Double check your valves, points etc.

Fuel system problem? 3-16-110

This is a VW filter. I use the other on my mowers or cut them up for fuel line reducers.

Where is you fuel filter before the fuel pump or after it?

Move it to after the fuel pump and before the Carburetor. That came from bug-o-rama a few years ago and it is my last I hope he comes back.

I checked my online source and they sell the $1.00 one.

When I ran my filter before the pump it would act like it was vapor locked moved the filter and no more problems.

OK, I think I have a fuel line that will reach and move it. If it blows up then I have an excuse to get a bigger motor Very Happy

I will continue to look for a source.

Check your points even if you dont have time to do a valve adjustment.

On your next day off you should try to adjust you valves. That way you are not rushed and they will be cold.

cheers

Edited to make sense.

I did the valves in February when I picked up the motor. The points are good. Wiring is good. Pills are good. I DID however, just find a bit a of rust......IN MY FRIGGIN GAS TANK!!!. How do I fix that??. Ive heard of some stuff you can pour in it to kill the rust, anyone have experience?. This is now my daily driver and need to fix it quick. By the way Im in school until about 8:30pm so if ya seen me online earlier but dont get a response until 9, thats why.

You could simply empty the tank and wash it out really well. Some people put crushed rock in and shake them around to break up the rust and then rinse it out thouroghly. I am sure there are some chemicals that can be purchased to do the same thing.

I have heard the rock trick also. Motor cycle guys do it all the time.

You may also need to check your jets if the crud made it past the filter.

I would check the whole system out. Clean the tank and blow clean air through all the lines. Put a new filter on and see what happens.

PostSubject: paul   Fuel system problem? EmptyFri Apr 08, 2011 11:54 am

I thought something real bad happened to my 1915. i was driving it and all of a sudden miss. Clogged jet.

When you blow out the fuel lines you do not want the tank or fuel pump connected. Just lines. Are you rubber hoses old, moist. I has a NOS fuel pump go out in days, gas ate the rubber. So do not assume. I would start over, clean tank and lines, adjust valves and points you said they are alright but what is the dwell on them.

I worked on some kids car that would not start with electrical issues. The battery terminal was loose so make sure your t's are crossed.

Me and Dann know from experience.
