What does this Pulley Go To?

Do any of you familiar with VW water pumpers know what this pulley is attached to?



My daughter's 2001 Cabrio is (and I quote) "making a funny noise".

It's a 2.0 Liter VW motor.

So I looked at it, and the whatever is below the alternator and the tensioner for the serpentine belt is spinning out of round and making a pretty significant noise. It is connected to the smaller v-belt that sticks out past the serpentine and is the top pulley.

I am going to go research, but if anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate your thoughts.

I think it might actually be the water pump.

I don't think it is the water pump as I now believe that to be connected to the timing belt.

I dunno what it is, can't seem to find any information.

Smog Pump? Power steering?

Can you tell if it is the big belt or the small one. If it is the big one it could be the tensioner. The small belt may be power steering. Let me know if you want be to have a look. We speak both water and air at our house.

It is the small v-belt.

Not the larger serpentine.

The smaller belt routes around three pulleys. By process of elimination, I think one could be the power sterring pump, one could be a smog pump, and the third, the one with the 'wobble' is on an offset and looks like it mounts to the case.

I thought it might be the water pump, but I am not sure. I found some informaiton about the water pump running off the timing belt. Could be just an idler.

Can't seem to find any good information on it.

PULLED UP A PIC OF BELT ROUTING ON MITCHELL ON DEMAND HERE AT THE SHOP AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE RIBBED BELT GOES ROUND THE COOLANT PUMP, GEN, AND CRANK. THE V BELT GOES ROUND THE CRANK AND POWER STEERING. THIS IS A SYSTEM WITHOUT A/C.

IF IT DOES HAVE A/C THE RIBBED GOES ROUND THE GEN, TENSIONER, CRANK AND A/C. THE V BELT GOES ROUND THE CRANK, COOLANT PUMP, AND POWER STEERING PUMP.

Video it and post, that way we can here the funny noise. It may save you a lot of time.

So based on Cliff's information and the vicinity of the smoke I believe it to be the coolant pump.

Going to take the belts off and see what is seized. Should be a fairly straight forward process at this point.

Who needs sleep, should be a fun night.

One seized coolant impeller thank you very much.

Now on to phase 2, finding a replacement.

Oh, and since this water pumper stuff is NEW to me, I do not believe I used the approved coolant draining method as I only managed to capture about 90% of the juice.

And I did find rust on the inside, but I think my submarine is almost back afloat.

I might get into this water thing, if I can put a TURBO on it!

I think the impeller assembly should be easy enough to get a hold of, but does anyone have any ideas about a gasket set for the water pump? and maybe a new thermostat? Does Napa or PFI have this stuff?

napa.. autozone.. kragens.. they all will have it. The pump usually comes with a gasket, but check the box before walking out the door.

A little rust can be normal... I have rebuilt many a water cooled engine in my time... a new thermostat couldn't hurt!

Air cooled man, that's the way to be. May was definitely throwing some sass my way while working on this thing.

However, I am kind of stoked about the idea of bolting a Jetta front end on this thing, I might be ok with it.

Of coarse, it could just be the coolant fumes making me think funny thoughts...

The coolant you use with the waterpumper vw is the the stuff from the dealership it is called g 12 or something similar. It is not expensive at all.

That may make sense Honda's make special oil for transmission and differentials. My waterboxer liked VW coolant.

That is why you don't see many vws having rust problems or waterpump problems unless they use a coolant that is not vw approved.

Well this one is in the books.

I smell like stinky VW coolant.

Don't tell anyone, but I could get into H20 VWs.

Although, there had to be a trick to those belts, they were a pain in the a$$.

They took longer than anything else to get back on.

There has to be a secret. Plus all those wires and hoses everywhere...
