3 VW's for the price of 1 Empty
PostSubject: 3 VW's for the price of 1   3 VW's for the price of 1 EmptyThu Apr 28, 2011 11:30 pm

Ok, need some help here. I got a lead on a '60 Bug today and the lady told me that there was another '70-something Bug that went along with it. They had to go together. So when plans didn't work out to go see the '67 I've been thinking about, I thought it was a perfect opportunity to go take a peak at this '60.

I'm going to flood you with pictures but I need some opinions. I have been looking for an early car. I want a '56-'61 Bug. This one is a little rough and I'll list some of the pros and cons in a sec.

The '60 is an original Coral Red car. The original engine is in the car and is seized. The pans will need attention but are not quite as bad as they were on my '63. I could drive the car for a little while in the condition that they're in. The low back buckets are gone and as you can see in the pics, high backs are in their place. The dash was not cut for a radio but it was cut for a guage of some sort. It has a perfect 4-tab hood but there is evidence of a bump in the front apron area. The hood lines up and seems to close nicely. There is only one Black Plate so that does me no good. The rear of the car is where I about lost my lunch. Not only has someone (with no taste) installed taillights from a fat chick, the car has been buttholed! The H-apron is pretty much garbage and is shoved into the lower crankshaft pulley. The left rear fender is garbage but the guy says he's got a cherry one. The rear lid is garbage but he was able to pull an extra one out of his shed. I saw no other rust on the car anywhere and it obviously wears a nice coat of patina.

The Super is a '71/'72 from what I know about Supers (which is nothing). It is a pretty damn nice car though. It's sportin' a sick set of Slot Mags and seems pretty darn straight and rust-free. The best part about it is that it has a 1600 in it that runs! Other than the engine, I have no other use for the car.

Then, the guy takes me around the other side and shows me this atrocity! It's a kit car that's on a VW pan and has VW power in it. Notice the dual carbs and hi-pro exhaust. Gotta love the Heart Wheels......never seen a set before. The whole mess is worthless to me except for again......the engine.

None of the cars have titles but they have all been out of the system for God knows how long. I would only be interested in titling the '60 and I'm not worried about the lack of papers for that one.

He said that all three have to go together......$2200 for the whole pile. I'm sure there's alot of things I'm forgetting but if you have questions, please ask. I need advice on if this is a good deal or not and if it's something I should consider. The thing that keeps clouding my thought is the fact that:

1) It's a '60
2) It's a Coral Red '60 (one of my favorite colors)
3) There's enough shit here to put this badboy on the road for $1200 and I could sell what I don't use and make the original investment price back.

Anyway, sorry for being so long winded.....Here are the pics.

That 60 would be a great car.. you got to save it from going to hell further.

I have 60 tail lights I would be willing to barter... and I have some later 60 low backs I might be willing to barter.. I want to get actual buckets from a bone yard.

Throw them 1000 and take the lot.. I don't think you could go wrong.

That buggy could be worth it alone. Sell it, make most of the money back.

You are right Brad. A 1960 uses the reserve valve and does not have a gauge.

You might have quite a bit of work there Greg but I think your efforts will pay off in the long run. You should be able to get your money back and more. I think you should go for it if you can make the room and have some time.

That kit car is SO late '70s!

You need yourself a leisure suit to drive that baby around.

The aftermarket gas gauge could be something. Some of those little accessories are pretty rare.

Might be able to properly advertise and sell off the bulk of that stuff, or the whole lot, and make a profit.
Sometimes that's the value in stuff like this. Turn 1200 into 3000 in a week.

Ok. I slept on it. I had to really try to talk myself out of this as this would be my perfect car. There's just too much going against it. Not any of the problems are that big of a deal by themselves but put all together, it just doesn't make sense. Even if the car had just one or two of these off of the list, it would make a big difference with me. Here are the things I see wrong:

1) Punched in rear (will need new H-apron. He has replacement deck lid and fender but there goes that patina'd look the car has)
2) Missing front low back buckets
3) No title
4) Been hit in front at one time
5) Someone has painted the entire inside of the roof a bright yellow (a continuation of this is seen on the door panels)
6) Missing the Snowflakes
7) Missing the other Black Plate

The deal is right. And if I didn't already have my '63 in the middle of a major restoration, I would probably jump on this. Thing is, right now, I just need to find something to get on the road cheaply and effortlessly as possible. Hopefully it'll work out so I can go look at that '67 tonight. Stay tuned....

None of that stuff is insurmountable, but you're right, you're already into another car.
Never crunched cars are becoming scarce.

Since the car is out of the system, getting a new title would be fairly easy, but even if you had both black plates, you'd still have to pay the extra $10 a year for them. The state only considers them original to the car if they're not dropped from the system. 10 years.

Once your Herbie is done, it'll be amazing. You'll quickly get over the sheepish grown man in a Herbie thing and start really just enjoying it. It'll be a fine car and have a little bonus.
