| Has anyone had to register a bug or any vehicle for that matter thats been dropped out of the DMV system? My bug has been sitting in a garage since 1994 with no registration or non-op on it. I looked up the VIN number on DMV's website and it says the vehicle isn't found. Just wondering how big of a pain in the a*s its going to be to get it on the road again. Any idea on the fees they hit you with and what the CHP inspects to allow it to be registered again??
Thanks, Michael | |

| Really should not be that bad if it is truly out of the system. They do a vin verification and then register it. There will be no back fees.. so a value sales tax (maybe) then the new reg and what ever the cost of the verification is. | |

| Not quite enough information.
Do you have the title? You may have to apply for a new title if you don't have one. This may require a bill of sale, easily fudged.
After 10 years, inactive vehicles are dropped from the DMV system. Vehicles dropped from the system are just that. Dropped. No back fees once it's past 10 years.

| Thanks for the info. I don't have the title but I have the bill of sale somewhere when I got in 94. At the time I paid some fees but they wouldn't let me register it in my name as it wasn't running. It made no sense to me then and still doesn't so I'm not really sure what they had in the system.
Do you know anything about the CHP inspection? I've heard you have to get this done before DMV can register it. Are they just looking for the normal safety stuff ie: seat belts, etc? Just want to make sure I have the correct stuff on it to pass. I plan on having different seats in it so it won't have the 3 point seat belts that a 68 has. Is this something I should wait on switching over until after the inspection?

| If the vehicle was totalled, it will require a brake and light inspection. It can be done by a certified repair shop. HOWEVER, now that it's out of the system, there is NO RECORD of that, so all you do is apply for a Title. There'll likely be no inspection. I'm not 100% on this. Try navigating their website, or the very helpful DMV.org, which is an independent help site. I found this. But, since your car is not going to be listed as Salvage or Junked, you'll likely not need an inspection. Vehicle InspectionsWhether your reclaimed vehicle was salvaged or junked, it will require inspections before you can legally drive it. The first inspection verifies that all the parts and components in the car were legally bought. This inspection may be done at your local DMV office by appointment or at the closest California Highway Patrol station, also by appointment.Besides this once-over, you'll also need to get a Brake and Lights Inspection certificate. Check the phone book for a service station or repair shop in your area that is certified to do these inspections.Note: If the vehicle was originally equipped with airbags, it will need to have airbags reinstalled. No Record of TitleIf a vehicle's been out of registration with the California DMV for four years or more, it might no longer be in the agency's database. Even if you have all the paperwork, including a paper title or salvage certificate, the vehicle's record will need to be reactivated. | |

| I bet it is handled like an out of state transfer. Vin check by DMV only. Do not do to AAA they do not do vin checks. Hold on to you wallet I just bought a car yesterday (RED HONDA) and they are not shy on the fees. When we were done I felt a kiss was appropriate but I did not push it. | |

| I don't think it is like an out of state. If it was a california car should be pretty easy... at least in my experience. I know some things have changed since the last time I did it.
When I brought my mini van over from Colorado it did not cost much.. they must have saw you coming with one of those little rice burner things and decided to tack on some money...hehehehe

| Thanks for the help. I'm hoping it won't be too bad in fees or I could end up with the most expensive bug on the road. lol And it wasn't totaled so I guess I have that on my side. | |

| There are special fees for Honda owners.
Since they are the most stolen and wrecked cars, you have to pay for the police, fire, and ambulatory services in advance.
It costs money to try and be cool.
Should have just bought a Ghia.
I know you are interested in airbags for safety, but a trash bag and a fire extinguisher can do the same thing.
Just McGyver it... | |

| When prodded, you're not half bad at this.
I know that's small praise coming from someone with fewer cable channels.

| I have done two cars that were out of the system. The 62 Nova was easy, had bill of sale, you need a Certified VIN Verifier to check the vin and fill out the paperwork (you can pay someone, call and make an appointment with CHP or take it to DMV and have them do it). Make sure your paperwork is in order and filled out correctly before going to DMV or else they bend you over. If you take it to CHP just tell them it is a project and they won't harass you about the small things, (they did not care that my dune buggy did not have bumpers or two rear view mirrors). | |
