| Driving home from school just now, heard a loud back fire and then another, then no more power. Nothing turns on. Maybe its a sign not to get married this weekend?. Im damn dead tired and want to go to sleep, but Im heading back into the garage to hopefully find a wire just grounded out. But its never that simple. | |

| That sucks.
I would start with the battery. The Ghia did the same thing.
I was driving up 49 (headlights on) and it backfired and started loosing power.
It finally died and would not turn over and the radio would only stay on a second.
My issue turned out to be the 'generator' warning light came undone and I learned that if the warning light circuit does not 'close' when you turn the ignition on, the alternator will not charge.
So I basically ran my battery dead...

| Absolutely nothing turns on. The alternator light did come on as soon as I got on the freeway, which sucks cause I just replaced it!. I put in the alternator this past Saturday and the battery was a fresh red top optima, which was also just bought two weeks ago. And yes Im getting married this weekend as well. Heading to Austin TX tomorrow afternoon. I was honestly too pissed to check anything earlier. Im praying matt is right and its just the battery was fried | |

| SOUNDS LIKE IF THE GEN. LITE CAME ON IT COULD BE SOMETHING IN YOUR GEN/REGULATOR, OR ALT. CURCUIT POSSIBLY LIKE MATT SAID DRAINED THE BAT.
NOT TO SCARE YOU BUT THE LAST TIME I HAD A COUPLE BACKFIRES AND LOST ALL POWER IT WAS COMING UP NEW CASTLE HILL GOING TO WORK. IT ENDED UP BEING 2 OUT OF THE 3 RINGS ON THE #2 PISTON SOMEHOW CAME OUT OF THERE GROOVE BENT OVER THE SIDE OF THE PISTON AND WELDED ITSELF TO THE PISTON. THAT REALLY SUCKED. FORTUNATLY I FOUND A GOOD LONGBLOCK ON CL OUT IN MARYSVILLE. MET THE GUY IN SMARTSVILLE GOT A 90 DAY WRITTEN GUARENTEE OF NO PROBLEMS WITH THE ENGINE GAVE HIM $200 GOT HOME WITH IT INSTALLED MY FAN SHROUD, ALT, INTAKE W/CARB, EXHAUST. PUT IT IN THE CAR AND BEEN DRIVING IT FOR THE LAST 13-15 MONTHS NO ISSUES.

| Yeah.. but not if the gen light came on and now there is no power at all. Sounds like the gen stopped charging and you used up the battery.
Check the fan belt.. maybe real loose?... but sounds like a wire maybe if the alt is brand new.
Good luck with it and Congrats! on the wedding. You will have to drag her along to some of the events

| I always double check the wires before I hook them up. I am glad I checked because the other week I switch back to an Alternator and I almost did it backwards. The Samba saved me.

| Yeah, you may have been running on just the initial charge, and once the electricity was gone, you backfired from lack of spark.
Could be gen/alt, or coil, or something hooked up wrong. Charge battery overnight, trickle charge if you can, see if it'll start. if so, you have something not charging it.
Good luck with your wedding. Don't let this upset you. It's probably minor.

| Check all connections. VWs are famous for loose connections. | |

| Did you have an alternator in before?
If it was a generator did you remove the regulator and change the wiring under the seat?
Did you change anything else?
Is the alternator one with an internal regulator?
I am in a pinch for time until next week, but if my parts dont arrive I may be able to look at the car tomorrow in the am.

| Check the ground strap from the battery to the car and at the battery connection. | |

| That was my thought.. I have had bad ground on VW's more than once.
Battery to car and / or the strap from the tranny.. might be the same one

| That's all good but what was changes. If you start with the new and move on to the old. You will save tons of time, and frustration.
How was the wedding? Any pic's

| Umm.....the car started. WTF!?!? I went out just now to load test everything and to double check my connections. For the hell of it I turned the key and my air compressor and lights came on. I cranked it over and viola! it started. Im even more lost as to what the hell it couldve been. But she is running fine, as well as the air ride. Last but not least, the "wedding" was only the paperwork portion of things. The actual fancy ceremony will be next year sometime when she comes back from overseas. | |

| Back to my first questions.
Do you know if the Alternator is internal regulated?
Did you have a generator?
What did you do with the regulator under the rear seat?
That is a big battery it should have some bounce back.'
Paul we can help just we need information.
