| That is a problem with the 009. You will have a little flat spot. Do you have electronic ignition? If not it helps a little. | |

| Work out your current issues first before you go modifying it. You should go through the complete tuneup process - and carb adjustment process. be sure not to try to set the idle with the choke step arm. The idle is the big screw on the left. A 30/31 is a little small for a 1600, but could be re-jetted. It should be satisfactory for basic driving as is if everything is right.
A valve adjustment will work wonders and is often overlooked. Part of the tune up. Yes, the electronic points will boost performance a bit.

| thank you Jim...Yes want to get it to run right befor any upgrades.. did complet tune up and it helped a little but i think the timing is still off a bit.. it sounds like it is trying to fire to soon and it is popping... | |

| Timing is part of the tune up. They will run and idle even if the timing is way off, but not well. Have someone help you do the timing to be sure. Start at the factory recommended setting.
If you don't have a copy of "How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" by John Muir, you need one. You can pick them up used on Amazon for about $15. All this is covered in it in easy to understand language. It's the best $15 or $20 you can spend on the car. | |
