| I'll give you a list of things to check first.
1. Adjust your valves while the engine is cold. .006" If you have never done this before this is something we can help you to learn. It is a necessity for VW ownership. Valves out of adjustment can cause extremely poor performance and overheating.
2. Check the breaker point gap. .016"
3. Spark plugs
4. Carburetor adjustment. (Not sure what you are running.)
5. Fuel filter
6. Air filter
7. Ignition Timing
More than likely if you take care of these items it will vastly improve the performance. If you do not know how I am willing to come by and see if we can figure it out. One of our members had similar trouble and we had it singing in a couple hours.

Can check 5 and 3 off the list I've replaced both gaps set according to spec on the plugs. Did the valve adjustment once but I didn't have anyone around to check my work which always makes me nervous. Timing, air filter, and carburetor well I could use some help with each. Does anyone here recommend I keep the aftermarket oil bath air filter that is on there or should I pick up something else?

| About the air filter, if you're just running a stock engine, nothing really works any better than your stock set-up. As long as it's been serviced and it's clean, you're good to go.
As far as what Lonny said....X2!! Get that fuel filter out of the engine compartment unless you want to roast weiners from the back of your car.

| Looks like you have a '68 oil bath on there. Have you checked all the tin----make sure everything is in place, no gaps. Check the engine to body rubber--front and rear. Also check your firewall insulation, sometimes it pulls away and partially obstructs the fan. Been there. As far as the valves go, you might want to check your crank pulley to verify it's correctly notched for TDC. Just a few extra things to look at... | |

| Yes. Get the fuel filter out of the engine compartment. The oil bath air cleaner is one of the best you can have. I am sure it is fine. Sounds like you might need to have your valves double checked. We'll see about maybe doing it this weekend. | |

| I would appreciate just knowing what all I need to do so I can start budgeting it all out. The engine was supposed to be and might be the only thing on the car in good condition. I already know I have a few hundred to put into re-wiring the whole thing.
P.S. I might be willing to trade a little computer work for some help with my car I'm what you might call a shade tree Sys Admin coupled with being a software developer.
