| I am cleaning and getting ready to start the build for the Ghia. I have had the case machined. The pulley end has been modified for oil drainage. The flywheel end received the same treatment The case has been cut back and tapped for full flow. This will allow the brass 90 degree fitting to clear the engine tin behind the pulley The case has been decked and opened up to accept the 90.5 pistons and barrels Next we have the 74mm counterweighted crank The heads are stock with a three angle valve job and they have been chambered to 55cc The rods have been static balanced end for end. You can see the grind marks on the big and little end to get them within spec. This is only the beginning and I have a long way to go and a lot to learn along the way. I thought that I would throw this out there to share with you guys. I am wanting to take my time and do it right. I have thrown a couple of motors together in my High School days, but nothing like this build. I am going to set the deck at .050 and will have a compression ratio of 8.5 :1 This is an adventure! I am looking forward to the journey as well as the end result. Enjoy! I will update as time and cash are available jeff | |

| I didn't even do the whole engine (balance), just the crank, and it made a world of difference.
Be sure to investigate cams next. I'm using an Engle 100 cam, which holds the valves open just a tad longer. Slight rumble at idle, like the big boys, but smooth and breathes well when driving. The Engle 110 might be overkill on a mild engine like my 1385, but probably not on this one. I think they recommend it for 1776 and larger.
Tip: Bigger cams will give a rough idle. Similar to when you see some big ol' Chevelle rumbling at a stop light. This is normal. It's simply over-breathing at lower RPMs. Also, use nothing beefier than heavy duty springs unless you're racing this car and are planning to rebuild it every 5K-10K. They'll flatten the cam lobes.
Weber cams are very highly rated. | |

| I already have the cam it is an Engle W100. It came as a kit with new lifters to match the cam. The heads have single high rev springs. I am looking for torque on the lower end of the power band. The goal for the motor is make traveling up the hill each day less of a challenge. | |

| Why balance half the motor, if you are going to do it right why skimp at the end. A balanced motor will give you longevity. | |

| Rods! I like to do a couple rods a day if at all possible. As for balancing, you're obviously right, but what I did was build a kick-ass 1200-to-1385, with just a few simple mods. It was in my budget and has plenty of low end. Had I had more time, I would have gone further/invested more, but I needed the car pronto for the El Dorado run Dann and I had been planning for a year. This is what I could come up with and afford on very short notice. Engle W100 cam, high flow oil pump, 1965 improved heads, triple ground valves, DeMello balanced crank, 30-31 carb, case machined for bearings. It's a nice evolution of the 40HP/1200 and I can give 1600s a run for their money, and blow most of them off the line. I like a dependable stock car I can get in and drive thousands of miles with little fuss, and I do, and both of my Bugs are completely no-excuse, right down to the 6V AM radio in one, working heat, working dome lights (two in Herbie), working first-click parking lights, etc. ...and darn it all if I didn't beat last year's Best in Show winner, a Rometsch, for 1st in our division this year at Kelley Park. All without being lowered, without dual carbs, being 12 volt, and all the other things I'm always told the car needs. I love an excuse to ramble on and post pictures, especially when I'm having a less that fantastic day at work .

| Jeff are you going to do a lighten flywheel? With your commute what it is I would suggest just a little not a full lighten one. You may like the results. And it will help with you street racing. | |

| no street racing, no lightened flywheel. I am not looking to get off the line quick. I want to keep things rolling along. BTW it will be a full balance after I test fit. Ray quoted $115.00 for a full balance, well worth it. | |

| Is that Flywheel and clutch. I wonder if it was on a little diet if it would help on the hill to town. If we were flat landers I would do a weighted crank pulley but the hills are different. Just watching your back | |
