A duel port is a dock where they have gun fights.

Dann is running a 1600 with a dual carb setup. it's plenty perky and he's tweeked it up a bit since last time he and i put my 1600 single carb against each other, which we are probably doing this Sunday afternoon. Mine's running particularly well with my new accelerator pedal.

Of course, Dann weighs like 800 pounds, so that's always a factor.

Paul if you build a solid foundation you will be fine. Building a good motor has a few simple rules. If you change one thing you have to look at what else is involved. You need to find out what cam you have. If it is a high performance cam it will not like a stock single carburetor. So you will need to keep you single IDF carb and get a good exhaust. Or run dual carburetors.

Talk to Eric he has built just a few motors in his day.

Ive pm'd speedbuggy, just waitin for his response and then Im full steam ahead. I picked up "How to hot rod a VW engine" and "How to rebuild a VW engine" today just to help keep from asking you guys my quantidrillions (yea its a reall number) of questions I have. I cant thank you guys enough for your input already, and I havent even begun to build yet. Tomorrow Im pulling the heads out and getting them ready to take to the shop. Both of my cranks are marked VW, I after putting them side by side I now see the HUGE difference. Theres also another complete set of connecting rods in the box. Ok, Im done typing, going to go look at what all I got as I never did before.

PostSubject: Re: 1600dp Build   1600dp Build - Page 2 EmptyWed Apr 20, 2011 3:54 pm

There's a certain amount of mixing and matching that can be done, but you have to be careful. If you're not 100% sure what you have measurement wise, reuse the original if it's good or buy something new.

Example. I had my 1200 built up to a 1385. I found out after I bought everything, including a counterbalanced 1200 crank, that if I had switched to a 1966 (1300) crank (I think), it would have fit AND increased the stroke and essentially made the engine a 1425 (or something like that). Cranks for 1500 or bigger don't fit.
Not sure I have the details right, but the lesson here being that some things will work, but keep in mind, some won't.

Despite the trolls, The Samba can be a wealth of information. The trolls usually avoid the technical discussions.
Ditto LoveBugFans, where there's fewer overall members and a very high mechanic-to-member ratio. You can usually get a solid answer the same day from someone who's been there.

Let me add that I'm a little curious. Despite all the work I have done on a VW, I've never been into an engine rebuild and would like to do one one day. It's a pretty cool skill.

Ive been doing some thinking and Ive come to the conclusion Ill keep it a 1600. Itll keep the budget lower, to help out with the "oh shit" moments. Ill go bigger on engine size down the road. For now, I want to build and drive. I WENT DIGGIN IN THE HEAVY BOX!! HERES WHAT I FOUND!!

I measured cause I wanted to make it look like I knew what I was lookin for
1600dp Build - Page 2 Engine10
Dosent matter anyway, gettin new ones

These looked almost brand new, maybe I can just clean them up and get them balanced?

This distributor looks good, but again, what the hell do I know?
1600dp Build - Page 2 Engine17

None of the parts appear to be beaten too badly. But I have a little cash and might as well replace or upgrade

This is the oil relief spring/bolt thingamagigger?
1600dp Build - Page 2 Engine19

Brand new friggin fuel pump. I gave the stand to my friend, but if anyone wants or needs it, its yours.

Yep. The other reason why I started this thread, just in case if anyone else out there has been wondering about doing this themselves. Im doing my best to take every picture
every step of the way(almost every step). Some people are intimidated or have no idea where to start to try this and wont try because of it. I figure if they read my post by chance they realize I was in the same position, and give it a shot on their own. Once again, I HAD ZERO CLUE WHAT TO DO WHEN I STARTED!!!

If I had more room, I'd totally do it. Dann has a 36 HP we should take apart and do one day. It's in good condition and was running, but weirdly had a cylinder rust up on him in elevated storage on an engine stand.

I think the case changed significantly from the 1100 to the 1600.

Here's CBs various oil pumps again. Looks like things 1970 and older and 1971/later might not be compatible. I don't know about this stuff, but looking might help you. Not sure of the cover/parts will fit.

CB oil filters
Other brands.

Oil pumps on the 1600 are determined by the size of your pump studs and whether you have a "dished" cam gear, or a "flat" cam gear. You have a dual relief case, so I'm pretty sure that it is a "big stud" case. (Does it use a 13mm wrench on the oil pump nuts?) The cam gear will be determined by what cam you use.
I think if you shop around, you can find a full flow setup for about half that price.

Ive cleaned up the case a little today, squeezed it in between adjusting the clutch cable and messing the exhaust on coca-cola. My question is, should I have it hot tanked to remove all the build up gunk inside?. Some say yes some say no. Could I just soak in simple green then take it to a pressure washer?. What works the best?.

I think hot tanked is the best if you have the money to spend. I clean them myself with Castrol Purple in a big plastic tub. Let it soak, scrub, repeat.....
A can of Carb cleaner with the little straw is nice for cleaning the oil passages. I use a .22 cal. rifle cleaning brush in the passages. Pipe cleaners are handy also.
Remember: If you think it's clean, clean it one more time.
