71' Squareback

I have a new project now. I just bought Cliffs 71 Squareback. His post is here Cliff's Post

It needs a of TLC. Needs a motor rebuilt and needs some cleaning and pampering. Right now I'm not sure what direction I want to go with paint. I kind of want to take it back to it's original orange color. I need to do some more research on how to remove the red paint without hurting the orange to bad. I've read stuff before on The Samba but need a refresher.

I plan on taking it slow with this one. I want to slowly replace seals and such and rebuild the motor.

Here are just a few pics I took of it at Cliff's shop. I will add more pics after it gets dropped off at my house. So stay tuned!!

LOL, you guy's are too funny! I have gotten myself another project, that is what I have done. LOL As far as Pinto wagons, I do have 4 two normal wagons and 2 cruisen wagons. I have been thinking about selling one of them though.

Today I did some clean up and experimenting. Also took some more pics of it in the sun.










I tried my hand at paint removal!





This is where I stopped for today.



I found that the paint that was in the sun came off a lot easier then the stuff in the shade. Problem is, it gets hot working in the sun. I my try using a heat gun inside the garage next.

We lucked out and Bob found a couple full universal motors. So hopefully we will be able to throw a motor together and get this thing running soon!

I GUESS THAT OVEN CLEANER WORKS PRETTY GOOD THEN. NICE TO KNOW.

GOT A GOOD START!!

We got the motor stripped last night. Now we just need to decide what good motor we will be using and then I get to put all the stuff back on.



Today a okiefied my headliner. Was going to use duck tape but couldn't find any. I found this aluminum tape and it seemed to be pretty sticky so I gave it a go. Just hope no one steels the car for the aluminum. LOL










I know, pretty hokey, but I don't want to replace the headliner till I'm ready to replace all the seals.

Then I got some more of the red off. I figure I will just do a little at a time every chance I get. Eventually I will get it all back to orange.

I can spray some Easy Off on it for you. It only takes the first layer of paint off.

The door is pretty rough! Was a pain to do too. Took twice as long to do the door then it did to do the half of roof.

The Clementine color is starting to look good! Well, good enough anyway.

Wow, I forgot to update this last week. LOL

Got all of the red off the passenger side.

We turned the car around and I was planning on getting the driver side finished this week, but the wind is not playing nicely. Oven cleaner burns when you get it on you! So needless to say progress has come to a halt for now. Hopefully tomorrow will be less windy.

I did get a surprise in the mail today. I had been talking to a guy on the Samba about an ECU cover. I asked him to let know how much shipping would be and gave him my address. Then I never heard from him again, till today. I got a surprise package in the mail.



One more thing off the list of things to get.

Yah it was a lot of work and about 12 or so cans of Easy Off. LOL Forgot to update and say that I'm done with the outside.

This was all that was left.

I still need to do the inside, but I may end up just finding a close match to the orange and painting it. I tried to do a small section and it is going to be really hard to get it off. Course I used cheap oven cleaner instead of the Easy Off when I tried so it may come off with Easy Off. Working on the bus right now so the Square is on the back burner.
