Registering a vehicle out of the DMV system

Back to the original post. The 70 Street Bug I got in 2010 had not been registered since 1990.

I took my bill of sale to the DMV, they had me write out a Statement of Facts, basically stating I bought the car from a guy who had no paperwork, and to the best of my knowledge there are no fees on the car. Filled out a form or two, then I had to bring the car in for a VIN verification. All they did was check 2 places where the VIN is on the car, and verify that they were the same, and matched the VIN on the new title. They didn't check any lights or safety equipment. VIN check only. The only other thing I was asked was if it was front or rear wheel drive, and how many cylinders. Took that form back to the DMV counter, filled out another form, and got my license plates and temporary title. The title came in the mail not too long after.

There's nothing to fear when doing this, just have patience to wait in line, fill out forms, and wait some more.

This isn't sounding so bad to do. I just need to find that damn bill of sale from 15 years ago now! Might be a dumb question but you mentioned they look for the VIN in two different places. Only VIN I can find is in the trunk area. Where would the other VIN be located? I don't see it on the dash area like a regular vehicle.
