First Gear Clutch Chatter/Stutter Empty
PostSubject: First Gear Clutch Chatter/Stutter   First Gear Clutch Chatter/Stutter EmptyTue May 29, 2012 12:21 am

I've got a '70 type 3 squareback that chatters or stutters in 1st gear. The rest of the gears seem to do ok. I've looked around the web and found that it could be the front transmission mount that is loose or broken. I've not been able to see anything like that when I look. Is there an easy way to tell if it is broken without tearing out the engine and transmission?

Thanks for any advice or info

Dann recently had this happen so I can tell you there's three things it could be.

1) Broken transmission mount
2) Warped flywheel/bad clutch
3) Broken Bowden tube

The easiest way to rule out the transmission mount is to put a floor jack under the trans and barely lift it (if it's not currently broken, you don't want to break it so don't lift it too far). You'll be able to tell when you watch the mount.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the group!

When I replaced the engine a few years ago I replaced the clutch plate also. I did not see any visual warping or damage to the flywheel at the time but who knows, I might have missed something. I've only got 100 or so miles on the engine since it's replacement

If it's violent, likely a transmission mount. This is a common and known VW issue.
I've had it.
They are rubber and nobody ever suspected they'd have to last 40+ years.
