| Hey everyone, meet Rainne. She is my Yamaha YFZ450 race quad. I am toying with the idea of selling her to make room for some different toys. I blew my knee out racing her a few years ago and can't quite run her like I used to. Although she is still a kick in the sand. Running a big bore 490 Ice Cube with a small increase in stroke to get about a 503. With 110 octane and 15% methanol mix she gets up and moves. Not for the faint of heart. Unbelievable torque and I have not reached her top end yet. I had her at about 95 in Oregon on the beach when the front started feeling really light and I chickened out. +2 Roll Design suspension all the way around with Elka long travel shocks. Only the frame is stock. Anyways, if anyone is interested or knows someone who is interested, let me know and I can ship a bunch of information and pictures. Or if any of you are fellow quad riders and want to geek out about riding in the sand that could be fun too. And yes, I am thinking about an aircooled sand rail... | |

| Never got into the sand thing.. but I used to have two quads that I took out on the forest roads all the time... what a blast. I love exploring.
Sand rail would be fun! | |

| Quads are great. That one looks a little scary though. It screams hospital bills. | |

| So I take it you have not heard of Dr Coward one of the best knee surgeons in the area. Works on the Sac Kings and put my wife's knee back together after a ski wreck.
So what ever you may of been thinking

| I had a long talk with a guy who builds engine adapters for VW transmissions. He said watercooled is the way to go. He is running a honda v6, tons of power less maintenance and burns less fuel. He lives in Portland and is always at the dunes on the weekends.

| I think I would slit my wrist before I put a Honda motor in a VW.. that is straight WRONG.
Now, the Subaru engine.. at least it is horizontally opposed. This mod has been going on for some time with great success.. I still would not do it just because I like the whole "air cooled" thing..

| If I was to build a water-cooled sand rail I would use a GM LS1 or LS2 motor depending on how crazy I wanted to get.
I have rode in a few and there is no comparison. No discussion. LS1 with extended tavel suspension and you're dialed. Suspension is as important as power when it comes to sand.
And an LS series crate motor is not all that far off when you start pricing out other options...
