Pardon my ignorance here but what's NASA stand for?

NASA stands for National Auto Sport Association, as Mr. Mateo stated above. Basically it is a national thing covering many different aspects of racing (mostly road racing, drift, etc.), but VW Drag Racing is also a part of it. But the Vw racing aspect is only at Sacramento Raceway, using the NASA name. No other tracks or areas have a NASA class that is only for VW racing.

Less than a week since winning the championship.....

.....motor and transmission are out, weight has been removed, bare metal has been primed.

Started some fabrication on the nose mount today.

This piece will bolt to the nose.



Welded to that will be another set of plates (still need to buy), which will then be bolted to the arched straps (unpainted in the next pic), which wraps around a length of roll bar tubing.





The roll bar will be attached to the car's chassis. The threory is the nose will tilt on the roll bar. I hope I can get back out there to finish the nose mount tomorrow. Unfortunatly I can only work on the car when weather permits as it is an outside car.

I say theory, but I know it will work. I had a baja bug a few years ago, and it's tilt nose was set up like this. It was set up quite a bit different (not as well), but same sort of idea.

Fabricated a bracket to mount to the beam using existing holes. (still will be getting a little more reinforcment, but I ran out of 1/2 inch square tubing).





Roll bar tubing added. Up high, its welded to steel plates and bolted to the body, with steel plates on the inside as well. Down low, welded to the bracket.





Then I welded a 1 inch square tube to the lower edge of the bracket, and gusseted it for strength. Then I welded the 2 pegs to it and gusseted them as well.





Here's the front end side. 3/4 inch square tubing welded and gussetted to the roll bar tubing and slip fit to the 1 inch tubing on the chassis.



Here you can see how it tilts forward. I still need to fab a bumpstop so it doesn't tilt too far forward, and drill holes/install pins so it is more secure on the slip fit. I also want to fill in all the open tube ends for a cleaner look.

Finished the fab work, including fuel cell mount.

Fuel lines made. Also ran new fuel line to the back of the car.



Fuel filter and pump mounted.

DZUS fastener plates welded in. Also smoothed the cowl area.





Painted the nose black.

Very cool...

Took the decklid stand-off kit off my Super Beetle and put it on this car. Looks good. I also made a new rear apron for it. It will be mounted using DZUS fasteners. Unfortunatly, when I was welding the DZUS mounting tabs on, the welder stopped working. It would really bog down when I hit the button, and after a couple seconds, it would throw the breaker. So that's a setback. So I rigged the apron in place for a photo op.

I need to get the apron and rear fenders mounted with DZUS fasteners, and after the motor is installed I will need to cut an opening in the apron for the exhaust. Then I can paintit and the fenders black to match the front end.
